An abundance of game
Unlike most rivers that drain into the sea, the Okavango River starts in the Angola highlands and travels approximately 1200km (750miles) before dissipating into the hot Kalahari region in Botswana, called the Okavango Delta which covers an area of around 250km x 150km (150 miles x 93 miles). The vast distribution of water creates an oasis of life in what would otherwise be a very dry region and animals flock to the area to revel in the abundance of life that exists around the sustenance of all living things: water. The Okavango is a permanent and seasonal home to a massive variety of wildlife including almost 200,000 animals, 400 species of birds, 71 species of fish and thousands of insects and amphibians.

The Okavango has become a sought after tourist attraction for the truly wild experience it offers, unlike more commercialized destinations in safari Africa. The low volume, low impact tourism approach that the Botswana government has endorsed over the years, means that the Okavango has remained a true wildlife treasure, bursting with creatures great and small whilst minimizing the human impact.
Wildlife in the area includes the big 5: elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo and hundreds of other species including wild dog, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, impala, wildebeest, hippo, crocodiles, lechwe, sable antelope…..the list goes on and on……..too numerous to mention! And we haven’t even started on the colourful explosion of the bird species. The best way to experience it is to come and see if for yourself.
